The time tables are a sequence of multiples of a number. It represents the list of multiplications of a number with the natural numbers starting from 1 to 10. Times tables demand both practice and memorization. They are of utmost importance for solving all math problems.

Multiplication is the key element that is used in times tables. It is nothing but the repeated addition.

For example, looking into the basic 2 times table, we start with 2 and add 2 in each step.

If you want to start learning the time tables, it is recommended to work on the 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s first, then the doubles (3 x 3, 7 x 7, 9 x 9). Next, move to each of the fact families.

The 1 times table, 2 times table, 3 times table, 4 times table, 5 times table and 10 times table are to be learned first. The 6 times table, 7 times table, 8 times table, 9 times table, 11 times table, 12 times table, and all the tables in order come in the next step to learn.

It is important to remember the one-digit time tables perfectly. Once you are confident in them, you can easily compute the results of two-digit tables using the multiplication algorithm.

View, read out aloud and repeat to get familiar with the tables. This must be an everyday practice to remember efficiently. Once you finish learning in sequence, you must start testing yourself with random questions on them. Only then you become proficient.

Here are some methods that help kids remember the times tables:

Multiplication by 2: Double the number that you are multiplying to get the result. For example, 2 x 6 = 12. That is the same as 6+6.
Multiplication by 4: Double the number you’re multiplying for twice. For example, 4 x 3 = 12. That is same as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.
Multiplication by 5: Count the number of 5s you’re multiplying and sum them up. Use your fingers if you need to count them up. For instance: 5 x 4 = 20. That is same as 5 + 5 + 5 + 5.
Multiplication by 10: This is extremely easy. Take the number you are multiplying and add a 0 to the right side. For example, 10 x 8 = 80.
