UK Grammar Schools Directory: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland

Grammar schools are academically oriented secondary schools, one among the three types of schools forming the Tripartite System. This is the first nationwide system of state-funded secondary education in England and Wales, created under the 1944 Education Act and was later echoed by the Education (Northern Ireland) Act 1947.

Grammar schools in the UK are state-funded secondary schools that select their students based on academic ability, usually through an entrance exam called the 11 Plus. These schools offer a rigorous academic curriculum, often focusing on traditional subjects such as mathematics, English, sciences, and languages.

Historically, grammar schools were established as part of the tripartite education system introduced after World War II, alongside secondary modern and technical schools. The purpose was to provide academic education to academically inclined students, while secondary modern schools catered to those with other vocational or non-academic interests. However, the tripartite system has largely been phased out, with many grammar schools remaining as selective institutions.

Characteristics of UK Grammar Schools:

  1. Selective Admission: Grammar schools typically admit students based on their performance in an entrance exam taken at 11, known as the 11-plus exam. This exam assesses students’ aptitude in mathematics, English, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning.
  2. Academic Rigor: Grammar schools are renowned for their high academic standards and challenging curriculum. They often offer a wide range of subjects at both GCSE and A-level, including traditional academic subjects and sometimes additional languages or sciences.
  3. Tradition and Discipline: Many grammar schools uphold traditions and values, often placing a strong emphasis on discipline, respect, and academic excellence. Some grammar schools have a long history and may have notable alumni or prestigious reputations.
  4. Independence: While grammar schools are state-funded, they often have more autonomy regarding curriculum, staffing, and resources than comprehensive schools. This autonomy allows them to maintain selective admission policies and uphold academic standards.
  5. Social Debate: The existence of grammar schools has been debated in the UK for decades. Critics argue that selective education perpetuates social inequality by favouring wealthier families who can afford tutoring for entrance exams. At the same time, proponents believe that grammar schools offer opportunities for academically gifted students regardless of background.
  6. Demographics: Grammar schools often serve diverse student populations, although there may be variations in socio-economic backgrounds depending on the local area and admission policies. Efforts have been made in recent years to increase access to grammar schools for students from disadvantaged backgrounds through initiatives such as outreach programs and bursaries.

Grammar schools differ from modern secondary schools in that they may accept students based on academic achievement. These are non-fee-paying schools.

Grammar schools were intended to teach an academic curriculum to the most intellectually able, 25 per cent of the school population, as selected by the 11 Plus examination.

Grammar schools are highly selective and have high standards. For this reason, many grammar schools are at the top of the National School League tables.

Grammar School’s Selection Process:

The schools select their pupils through an examination known as the “11 Plus”. The typical grammar school test age is considered to be 11, hence the name eleven plus. Knowing the prerequisites for the desired school entrance exams is necessary if your child longs to get into a grammar school. To enrol your child into any Grammar School, they should take the entrance exam termed the 11+ exam, conducted by CEM / GL boards.

The exam boards, namely, conduct the 11 Plus exams.

  1. GL assessment 11+ – previously known as NFER.
  2. CEM 11+ – developed by the Durham University Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring.

Please read the article CEM Vs GL to learn more about these boards, their exam pattern and style, etc.

They also provided economic funding to students who qualified for the 11 Plus test. This made secondary education after 14 free for potentially able students with weaker economic backgrounds.
