CEM 11 plus
CEM stands for the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring, a research group based at the School for Education, University of Durham. The CEM 11 plus is used to examine students for a grammar school placement. This makes the UK grammar schools adopt a specific selection process for their admissions, and determine which students meet their academic requirements.
CEM VERBAL REASONING 11
The CEM definition of verbal reasoning is very broad, incorporating various question types and is more akin to an English test. The type of question that will appear in the test is unpredictable, and hence you must be well acquainted with all kinds and practice them thoroughly.
At 11PluseHelp.co.uk, we have many questions and practice tests on CEM style format. We have loads of questions under each section. There are topic-wise tests, short and long tests, including standard mocks. You can take tests as many times, and test results appear immediately with clear explanations given under each question.
The question types could be:
CEM VERBAL REASONING QUESTION TYPE-1 COMPREHENSION TEST
This question type is similar to the comprehension text that appears in other 11 Plus exam, Independent School Exam or SATS exam. The child must go through the given text passage thoroughly, and able to answers the questions below related to that comprehension. Each question has the options provided below.
They should be able to read quickly, fluently and understand accurately. Since every option seems to the correct one, children need to be able to think carefully and answer under exam conditions.
CEM VERBAL REASONING QUESTION TYPE-2 CLOZE VOCABULARY TEST
These questions consist of a short passage of text with certain words with missing letters. The task is to use their vocabulary knowledge and spelling skills to fill in the missing letters. Reasoning skills are much crucial for this task because the words are to be deduced based on the context.
The only way to answer these questions perfectly is by learning as many words as you can with correct spelling and read more texts.
CEM VERBAL REASONING QUESTION TYPE-3 CLOZE USE OF ENGLISH TEST
In these questions, there will be sentences with missing words. The child must select the most appropriate word from the options given. The options might contain words with incorrect spellings, a word which is closely related to the correct word but not right, a correct word but in the wrong tense, a homophone of the correct word etc.
Focussing on core English skills like tenses, meanings of words and spellings is essential for your excellent performance in the test.
CEM VERBAL REASONING QUESTION TYPE-4 CLOZE SYNONYMS TEST
The question format is such that the child is asked to select a pair of words, one from each group that are similar in meaning.
Doing lots of tests will expose children to new words every time. Moreover, the words they come across should be learnt adequately for sustainable performance improvement activity.
CEM VERBAL REASONING QUESTION TYPE-5 CLOZE OPPOSITES TEST
Opposites tests are pretty much common in every 11 Plus test, either for a grammar school or an independent school. The question format is similar to that of the cloze synonyms test.
The question may also be asked to select a word from four words under options which is most opposite in meaning to the given word.
Children need to work to develop excellent vocabulary and spelling skills and apply those skills while performing these tests.
CEM VERBAL REASONING QUESTION TYPE-5 SHUFFLED SENTENCES
The task here is to rewrite the sentence in the correct order, given a line that is completely jumbled up.
The question may also come in such a way to find out the additional word that is unfit in the given sentence.
The child must employ ACTIVE thinking to solve such questions. He must grab the subject, object and verb of the sentence. He must be aware of sentence formats for different tenses, conjunctions being used and prepositions.
