11+ exam Boards

11+ exam Boards are the examiners for the 11 Plus exams in virtually all regions where the 11 Plus test is still used. Which exam board will be used usually depends on the location of your chosen grammar school. So before you start preparing for the 11 Plus test, you need to know which exam board will administer the test. Although their exam formats are similar, there are quite differences that will demand how your child prepares for the test.

There are two main exam boards for the 11-Plus exam:

1. GL assessment 11+ – previously known as NFER.

2. CEM 11+ – developed by the Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring at Durham University.

Let’s have a look into the key features of these two exam boards.

GL assessment VS CEM test

Subjects being covered

GL: The GL assessment covers up to five subjects: English, Maths, Spatial reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Grammar schools can opt for any of the combinations of subjects for entry-level 11+ exam.

CEM: The CEM test is conducted from disciplines, namely numerical reasoning, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The point to be noted is that the CEM definition of verbal reasoning is broader than that of GL and incorporates things topics like Comprehension.

Format of the exam

GL: Most of the GL 11+ exams are of either Traditional Format (the answers in the space provided in the 11+ exam paper) or Multiple-Choice Format(where the answers are to be marked in the separate sheet ). The questions are chosen from GL question banks. So regular practice helps to familiarise children with those question types.

CEM: The question paper is categorised into sections which may, for example, move from short maths to non-verbal questions to worded problems. The exam format may be either traditional or Multiple-choice. The weighting of each subject is not known before the exam, due to the mixed nature of the papers.

Time duration

GL: It usually lasts for about 45 minutes.

CEM: Since there is no particular format designed, the exam duration changes from year to year. There will typically be more questions than are likely to be answered in the time allocated. Hence time management is of great importance for this test.

Summary

Hope you guys got a clear idea about these exam boards. Now the question is, how is this helpful?

Well, each of these board exams requires a set of skills to excel. His/her preparation must be based on the exam board he is taking.

For example, your child must focus on past papers and the question bank for the GL Assessment examined test, and the prior skills are strong vocabulary, logic, maths and spelling skills.

However, for the CEM examined test, train your child in developing a deep and rich vocabulary. Also, encourage your child to use more sophisticated words to describe something. Here the child must focus on strong English, Comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and maths skills.

This reveals that CEM is quite complicated than GL assessment test.
